Russia tightens the siege of fire, Ukraine withdraws from the strategic eastern city

The governor of Lugansk said that Ukrainian forces had to withdraw from the city of Severodonetsk after fierce clashes with the Russian army.

"Unfortunately, we will have to withdraw our troops from Severodonetsk. It makes no sense to remain in positions that have been destroyed after months of hostilities, since the death toll in the unprotected areas can be significant. can increase every day," Lugansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said on television today 24/6.

"Our troops, who are stationed there, have received orders to withdraw to new positions, and will continue to fight from these positions," Gaidai added.

According to the Lugansk governor, the situation in Severodonetsk has become unstable after the continuous shelling by Russian forces over the past few months.

"The entire infrastructure of the city was completely destroyed. More than 90% of the houses were shelled, about 80% of the buildings were severely damaged. These structures were no longer able to recover and had to be destroyed. demolish," said Gaidai.

Earlier, hundreds of Ukrainian civilians and soldiers took shelter in the Azot chemical plant in Severodonetsk, while Ukraine and Russia struggled in the city. The Russian military has called on the Ukrainian forces in Azot to lay down their arms and surrender, similar to the 2,400 soldiers at the Azovstal factory in the city of Mariupol.

Mr. Gaidai said that Russia is now targeting Lysychansk, the city opposite Severodonetsk across the Donets River. However, the Lugansk governor confirmed that Russia's attempt to deploy reconnaissance groups to penetrate Lysychansk had been repulsed. He said evacuations, military and humanitarian supplies to Lysychansk were still going on.

Oleksiy Gromov, a Ukrainian defense official, said Russian forces were trying to encircle Ukrainian forces defending Lysychansk. The Ukrainian official said that all of Lysychansk was within range of Russian fire and that Ukrainian troops in the city could retreat to new positions to avoid encirclement.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said that the battle for control of the two cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk in eastern Ukraine's Lugansk province is "entering the peak of fierceness". Ukraine believes that Russia is trying to control both Lugansk and Donetsk, two provinces in the Donbass region - the industrial center of Ukraine.

If Russia controls Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, it can create a springboard for full control of the Donbass region. After taking control of the Donbass, Russia could establish a corridor on the land connecting eastern Ukraine to the Crimean peninsula.

In a speech on the evening of June 22, President Zelensky said Ukraine must "liberate the country, win" and that the process must happen "faster". Mr. Zelensky continued to call on countries to donate more heavy weapons and in an earlier time to Ukraine.

" Massive air strikes and shelling took place in the Donbass. The enemy's goal here remains unchanged, they want to gradually destroy the whole Donbass. Lysychansk, Slovyansk, Kramatorsk - they aim to turn the this city became Mariupol. It was completely destroyed," stressed Mr. Zelensky.

Analysts predict that Ukraine is about to experience its fiercest week since Russian forces declared control of the city of Mariupol in May.
