NATO wants fast accession if Finland, Sweden apply to join

 NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has pledged to seek quick admission to Finland and Sweden if the two countries apply to join the military alliance.


Sputnik reported, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said on March 31 that he hoped that Sweden and Finland would soon be granted NATO membership if the two countries applied to join.


"I visited Finland and Sweden last fall and I saw that the militaries of both countries met NATO standards, as well as the potential for close cooperation between Finnish, Swedish and NATO forces. If they have applied to join, I expect that they will be very welcome and that we will work to move quickly through the accession procedures," said Mr. Stoltenberg.


Earlier, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said she did not rule out the possibility of Sweden joining NATO after Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24.
