This is the first time that Moscow has used the Kinzhal hypersonic missile in a special military operation in Ukraine, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

It also marks the beginning of Russia's deployment of weapons to targets in Western Ukraine, after a period of focusing on attacks from the north, east and south.

Previously, Russia carried out missile launches against a Ukrainian military base in Lviv, or a MiG-29 fighter repair factory in Western Ukraine.

Also on March 19, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the country's Bastion coastal missile system destroyed a Ukrainian radio intelligence center in the Odessa region, Black Sea. Earlier, Ukraine admitted that it was "locked" by Russia to access the Sea of Azov, fueling speculation that Russia might move further down into the Black Sea area below in the coming days.

The Kinzhal missile (named dagger in Russian) has a range of about 2,000 km and can travel 10 times faster than the speed of sound (Mach 10). It can be armed with a nuclear warhead or a conventional warhead. This is one of the most modern missiles recently put into service by Moscow.

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, this type of missile is currently "invincible" because it is capable of penetrating and defeating all existing and future air defense systems.
