US military plane crashes while participating in NATO exercises

A US military plane crashed while participating in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) exercise on March 18, leaving four people missing.

Sputnik quoted information from the Norwegian Emergency Services Agency on March 18 as saying that an American MV-22 Osprey aircraft was "reportedly missing" at 6:26 pm local time on March 18 in the city of Bodo, Northern Norway while participating in NATO exercises.

Rescuers have discovered traces of the ill-fated plane in the area where it disappeared, but due to bad weather, the rescue helicopter could not reach the scene.

Jan Eskil Severinsen, a spokesman for Norway's Emergency Services Agency, said: "We are not at the scene so we cannot confirm the condition of the four crew members. However, we do know. It was a plane crash."

NATO has deployed 30,000 troops, 50 ships and 200 aircraft from 27 member countries in Norway to conduct military exercises called Cold Response 2022 that began on March 14 and is expected to last until April. The drills were planned long before Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in late February.
