Russia warns of possible risk of "military confrontation" with the US

Russia considers current Western moves in Ukraine dangerous and warns that these could lead to "military confrontation" between the US and Russia.

In an interview with Newsweek, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said: "Western countries are directly involved in current events (in Ukraine) when they transfer weapons and ammunition to Ukraine."

Antonov warned that such moves would only make the conflict worse and could lead to a direct confrontation between Russia and the US.

"We warn that such actions are dangerous and provocative because they are against us. Such a move could drag the US and Russia down the path of direct military confrontation," Antonov said. He stressed that any supply of weapons and military equipment from the West to Ukraine is a legitimate military goal for the Russian Armed Forces.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the opening of a special operation in Ukraine to demilitarize the neighboring country. Moscow has repeatedly asserted that it has no plans to seize control of Ukraine, but only targets Kiev's military goals.

Antonov said the Russian operation was designed to "reduce the military threat from Western countries that are trying to take advantage of the Ukrainians in the war against the Russians".

The Russian diplomat attributed the February 24 campaign to an incident eight years ago, when the Maidan protests led to a "bloody coup d'etat to overthrow the legitimately elected Ukrainian government" and then, "radical nationalists come to power in Kiev".

The coup led to the two regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in the Donbass declaring secession from Kiev. Antonov accused the Ukrainian side of violating the Minsk agreements on the Donbass situation, leading to many years of fighting.

Antonov also denied allegations that Russia was involved in the deaths of civilians in Bucha, a suburb of Kiev. He stated that Moscow "is taking the necessary measures to protect the lives and safety of the people".

The Russian ambassador accused the Ukrainian authorities and Western media of deliberately orchestrating the incident to blame Russia. He also said that videos that Ukraine said were evidence of the events in Bucha included "dead people who appeared to move or stand up" - a factor that raised questions about the accuracy of the reports. this document.
