Britain has imposed sanctions on the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the intense war in Ukraine.
The British Foreign Office announced on April 8 that the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin will be banned from traveling and have their assets frozen in the UK.
Similar sanctions were also imposed on the daughter of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Previously, Mr. Lavrov and Mr. Putin were both sanctioned.
The UK also announced new sanctions against Russia, which include freezing the assets of Sberbank and Credit Bank of Moscow, banning all new investments by British citizens in Russia, pledging to stop importing Russia's coal and oil exports before the end of this year, followed by a complete cessation of imports of Russian gas, iron and steel. Britain also added eight more Russian oligarchs to the list of sanctions.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said this appeared to be the toughest package of sanctions ever by Britain. Britain says Western sanctions have frozen about 60 percent of Russia's total foreign currency reserves.
The White House this week announced that the US, along with the G7 and the European Union (EU) will continue to impose tough economic sanctions on Russia.
The new sanctions target two of Russia's biggest banks, Sberbank and Alfa Bank, according to a senior US official. Accordingly, the US banned all transactions with these two banks except for energy import payments. Any assets of these two banks connected to the US financial system will be frozen, while US citizens are prohibited from doing business with the two banks.
In addition, the US also imposed an asset freeze and a ban on transactions with a series of high-ranking Russian officials and their family members, including Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Vice Chairman of the National Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, members of Russia's security council, President Putin's two daughters, and the wife and daughter of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
President Joe Biden also signed an executive order banning any new investment by US citizens in Russia in order to "further isolate Russia from the global economy" and "reduce Russia's global competitiveness." . The US Treasury Department is also expected to publish a list of important Russian state-owned enterprises that are banned from doing business with US citizens and have any assets within US jurisdiction.
The United States and its Western allies continue to strengthen sanctions to pressure Russia after Moscow launched a military operation in Ukraine from February 24. The Kremlin recently admitted that Russia is experiencing an economic "shock" due to "unprecedented" Western sanctions.
