Belarus establishes a new military command on the border with Ukraine

Belarus has decided to create a Command to protect the south of the country from the increasingly tense situation on the border with Ukraine.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko on May 26 ordered the establishment of the Southern Regional Operations Command with the task of protecting the country's southern border with Ukraine.

"A new front has opened up and we can't help but notice it. Even before the Southern Regional Operations Command is officially established, we have a responsibility to strengthen our defenses. the southern border area quickly. That task must be carried out today," President Lukashenko emphasized during a meeting with Belarusian defense officials.

Lukashenko also requested that "the army, special forces and battalion-level combat groups need to be rotated to the southern border to coordinate defense with the border guards".

Also in this meeting, the President of Belarus mentioned the deployment of Russian-made missiles in the south of the country to strengthen the defense capabilities.

This decision of President Lukashenko shows the danger of an armed conflict on the border between Belarus and Ukraine.

Earlier, the director of the Belarusian Security Council Alexander Volfovich on May 22 said that the country's border guards had observed an increase in Ukrainian military activities along the common border between the two countries. Large numbers of Ukrainian troops have been deployed close to the Belarusian border and a few sporadic incursions and attacks have been reported.

Ukrainian authorities on May 23 also tightened regulations at the border area with Belarus. In the Kiev, Zhitomir and Rovno regions, all movement of civilians has been banned within 1 km along the border. A curfew from 10 pm to 5 am in the border area was also issued by the Ukrainian side.

The above moves of the Kiev side have made Belarus worry about a possible conflict in the near future in the border area between the two countries. The Belarusian Defense Ministry immediately ordered its forces at the border with Ukraine to inspect weapons and equipment to ensure their combat readiness.

Belarus is considered the closest ally of President Vladimir Putin's government. Thus, relations between Minsk and Kiev, already strained, have worsened since Russia began its special military operation in Ukraine in February.
