Russia closes siege of Eastern Ukraine, Kiev says war in Donbass "very difficult"

 President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that the current situation in the Donbass region is very difficult when Russia concentrates military forces in Eastern Ukraine.


President Volodymyr Zelensky said on May 27 that the current situation in Donbass was "very difficult", Russian forces were concentrating and using "maximum artillery" in this area.


"That's why we must strengthen our defenses, strengthen our resistance, and Donbass will again belong to Ukraine. Even if Russia destroys Donbass, we will rebuild each city, each neighborhood," he said. Zelensky emphasized.


Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also said that Donbass is in a difficult situation.


"The military situation in eastern Ukraine is even worse than people think and Ukraine needs heavy weapons to deal with Russia effectively," Kuleba said.


Earlier, President Zelensky admitted that Donbass was "totally destroyed" because Russia possessed an overwhelming amount of weapons 20 times over Ukraine. According to him, every day about 50-100 Ukrainian soldiers die fighting in the East. Therefore, he urged the West to continue to provide weapons to help Ukraine cope with the Russian military campaign.


The statement of the Ukrainian authorities comes as Russian forces are besieging the eastern city of Severodonetsk in an attempt to control the entire Lugansk province.


Lugansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai said on May 27 that Russian forces had surrounded two-thirds of Severodonetsk and 90% of buildings in the city had been destroyed. It is the largest city in the Donbass region that is still under Ukrainian control.


Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Ganna Malyar said on May 26 that the fighting in the Donbass was at a stage of "extreme fierceness".


"The fighting is at its peak. The enemy is simultaneously attacking our army's positions in many directions. We will see an extremely difficult and long period of combat ahead. ", Deputy Minister Malyar said on May 26.


According to Deputy Minister Malyar, "the situation remains very difficult and shows signs of worsening". "This is a war and losses are inevitable," he said.


Oleksiy Gromov, Director of the Operations Department of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army, admitted that Russia is dominant in the fighting in Lugansk. The official said that Russia is moving Iskander missile systems to the western Brest border region of Belarus. This makes Kiev worried that Russia is about to launch new missile attacks on western Ukraine.


Russia is moving closer to its goal of encircling Ukrainian forces in the east. Thousands of Russian troops are attacking from three sides to encircle the Ukrainian army in Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. If these two cities fall, almost the entire Lugansk province will be under Russian control.


Russian troops also broke through the defenses in Popasna, a city south of Severodonetsk, and threatened to encircle Ukrainian forces there. Vadym Denisenko, an adviser to the Interior Ministry of Ukraine, said that 25 Russian battalions are trying to surround the Ukrainian army in the east.


Western military analysts see the fighting in Severodonetsk and Lysychansk as a possible turning point in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as Moscow's current priority is control of eastern Ukraine.
