Russia is about to build a "steel shield" that uses missiles 9 times faster than sound

Russia is said to be developing a new coastal defense missile system using the Zircon hypersonic missile, a weapon nine times the speed of sound.

Tass quoted two sources familiar with the Russian Defense Ministry as saying that the country is developing a new coastal defense system using Zircon hypersonic missiles.

"The manufacturer NPO Mashinostroyeniya in Reutov (near Moscow) is developing an advanced coastal defense missile system using Zircon hypersonic missiles. It is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by the end of 2022." , a source said.

Another source said that the new defense system, like the Bastion shield (deploying Oniks missiles), will also be capable of hitting land and sea targets.

NPO Mashinostroyeniya, a subsidiary of Russia's Strategic Missile Corporation, declined to comment when contacted by Tass.

Russia for years has announced the development of a series of weapons with technology "from the future", amid rapidly escalating tensions with the West.

In February 2019, Russia revealed that the Zircon missile can reach speeds of about Mach 9 (equivalent to 10,000 km / h), with the ability to hit targets at a distance of more than 1,000 km.

In a 2018 speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned Zircon as one of the strategic systems that can defeat enemy missile defense systems and ensure Russia's ability to respond. With outstanding features, Zircon is considered an "unstoppable" missile against current air defense complexes.

According to Russian media, Zircon is designed against surface and land targets. According to Russian naval officials, one of their priorities when building Zircon is so that this weapon can destroy the opponent's carrier battle group in the scenario of an all-out conflict.
