Russian officials warned that countries providing weapons to Ukraine would have serious consequences in the context of an escalation of hostilities.
"The leaders of the European countries led by Germany are able to draw their countries into big problems. They become the party to the conflict by supplying arms to Ukraine. All leaders. of countries that decide to supply arms (to Ukraine) must be brought to justice as war criminals," State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin wrote on Telegram on May 2.
Mr. Volodin warned that the leaders of these countries "are dragging the world into a disaster" by supplying arms to Ukraine.
Recently, Russia has repeatedly announced the destruction of weapons stockpiles that the West provides to Kiev in the context of the West increasing heavy weapons to support Ukraine to deal with the second phase of Russia's military campaign. Moscow has repeatedly warned that the supply of weapons to Kiev by the US and its allies is a dangerous act and any foreign weapons shipment to Ukraine will also become a "legitimate target" of Russian forces.
The US and its NATO allies are continuing to supply Ukraine with weapons to help stop the Russian advance. Ukraine's president has repeatedly called for weapons aid, amid fears of a major battle breaking out in eastern Ukraine.
10 European countries quietly buy Russian gas
While many European leaders have publicly stated that they will not buy Russian gas in rubles at the request of President Vladimir, Gergely Gulyas, chief of staff to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, said on May 1. Putin, 10 European Union (EU) countries still silently comply with this request.
However, the leaders of the above countries did not admit to buying Russian gas in rubles.
Mr. Gulyas said that Hungary had opened a euro account with Russia's Gazprombank. The bank will then convert the payments into rubles before passing them on to suppliers in Russia. This system allows European buyers to comply with President Putin's request.
President Vladimir Putin in March signed a decree requiring "unfriendly" countries, mainly Europe, to pay for Russian gas purchases in rubles, or Moscow would be forced to cut off supplies.
It is not clear which EU countries Mr. Guylas is referring to. Gazprom, the Russian energy giant, has stopped supplying Poland and Bulgaria after both refused to pay in rubles. However, according to a Bloomberg report last week, 10 of the EU member states have set up accounts at Gazprombank, and 4 have paid for Russian gas using this mechanism.
Due to its dependence on Russian gas, Hungary opposes EU sanctions on this important commodity. Mr. Gulyas reiterated his commitment to continue buying Russian gas and opposed EU sanctions.
To protest against Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, the European Union (EU) has imposed 5 sanctions packages on Moscow and is preparing to launch a sixth package. However, due to its great dependence on Russia's energy supply, So far, Europe has not been able to impose an embargo on its oil and gas. Instead, the EU plans to gradually reduce dependence.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied Western accusations that Russia was "blackmailing" Europe by stopping gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria, and warned Russia could cut off gas supplies to those countries. other European countries if they continue to refuse to pay in rubles.
