Ukraine accuses Russia of wanting a "complete blockade of the economy"

Ukraine accuses Russia of wanting to "completely blockade the economy" of Kiev through its control of the Black Sea region.

In an interview with Australia's 60 Minutes program broadcast on May 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine could lose tens of millions of tons of grain because Russia has blocked ports in the Black Sea region of the country. Kiev.

"The Russian side doesn't let ships go in and out (Ukraine ports). They control the Black Sea region. Russia wants to completely block our economy," Zelensky accused.

He warned that Ukraine's failure to get grain out of the Black Sea could trigger a global food crisis affecting Europe, Asia and Africa.

Ukraine is a major global grain and food exporter. Many countries depend on Ukraine's wheat supplies. According to United Nations statistics, in the past three years, together with Russia, Ukraine accounted for about 30% of world wheat exports and 20% of global maize exports.

Almost 4.5 million tonnes of Ukrainian grain are currently stuck in Ukrainian ports, said Martin Frick, official of the United Nations World Food Program.

Many parties have also warned of a food crisis in many countries due to the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war. Rising food prices and disrupted supplies can have a dramatic impact on the world's food security.

The United Nations warns that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine creates not only a current humanitarian crisis but also a future threat as food prices rise and production capacity declines.
