The Ukrainian army has launched a counterattack against Russian forces in the Kharkov region. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry claims that the country's air defense system has intercepted air attacks from Ukraine.
The Guardian, citing a senior US defense official and other sources, said that the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kharkov region launched a major counterattack against Russian military positions.
This counter-offensive helped the Ukrainian side recapture the Staryi Saltiv area and pushed Russian forces about 40 km away from Kharkov.
Analysts say that the recent counter-attack by the Ukrainian army has not yet cut off the ground communication lines connecting Kharkov with Izyum of Russia. This would be the start of a broader Ukrainian campaign to dislodge Russian forces from positions around the city of Kharkov. It will contribute to creating a dilemma for the Russian military as they will have to decide between concentrating their forces to hold the outskirts of Kharkov or spreading their troops to control the central areas of the city. city.
Elsewhere, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its air defense systems had prevented many missile, rocket and drone attacks from Ukraine.
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on May 3 that Russia's air defense forces shot down a Tochka-U missile, nine Smerch rockets and a Ukrainian drone.
"Russian military air defense systems destroyed a Ukrainian drone in the Rudnya region, Chernigov region. In the Novaya Dmitrovka region, a Tochka-U ballistic missile was shot down. 9 rockets fired from several disabled Smerch launchers in the Alexandrovka and Kamenka regions of the Donetsk region and the Semyonovoskoye, Donetskoye, Malaya Kamyshevakha and Chervony Shakhtyor regions of the Kharkov region," Konashenkov said.
The Tochka-U is a modernized version of the Soviet Tochka high-precision tactical ballistic missile system. Developed by the Kolomna Mechanical Design Bureau, the main task of the Tochka missile is to hit small targets at a distance of 15 to 120 km behind enemy defense lines. This missile has only one stage carrying the warhead and can be controlled during the entire flight.
In Russia, the Tochka-U missile has been gradually phased out since 2019 to make way for missiles with greater accuracy and power, such as the Iskander-M system.
