Ukraine's president calls on the West to increase sanctions on Russia

President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the West to impose stronger sanctions on Moscow to end the "pointless war" in Ukraine.

"Ukraine will always be an independent country and will not be broken. The only question is what price our people will pay for their freedom, and what price Russia will pay for life. senseless war against us," President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a speech on the night of May 26.

"The catastrophic events that are taking place could still end if the world treated the situation in Ukraine as if it were facing a similar situation themselves, if the major powers did not play with Russia but really push for end the war," Zelensky added.

President Zelensky complained about disagreements within the European Union (EU) over the imposition of more sanctions on Russia. He also questioned why some countries prevented the increase in sanctions against Russia.

The EU is discussing a sixth package of sanctions, including an embargo on Russian oil imports. The embargo requires consensus to pass, but Hungary has protested, saying its economy would be affected too much.

It takes three to four years for Hungary to shift away from Russian crude and huge investments to adjust to its economy. Therefore, until an agreement is reached on all issues, Hungary cannot support the oil embargo proposed by the EU.

President Zelensky recently repeatedly criticized the West for not being united enough in supporting Ukraine to cope with Russia's military campaign, despite the US and European countries' aid with billions of dollars worth of weapons. for Kiev. He criticized Hungary for not being as united as the rest of the EU, and pointed out the lack of consensus on Finland and Sweden's application to join NATO.

President Zelensky has repeatedly affirmed that the Russia-Ukraine conflict can only be ended through diplomacy. He said that the outcome of the negotiations must be "fair" for Ukraine. The Ukrainian leader also stated that he would not make territorial concessions to end the conflict with Russia.

President Zelensky said he was only ready to negotiate directly with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, not through intermediaries. He also claimed that President Putin was the only Russian official he was willing to meet to discuss ending the conflict. According to the Ukrainian leader, if President Putin "knows the actual situation", there is still a chance to find a diplomatic solution to end the conflict.

Zelensky called on the West to continue to provide weapons as Russia intensifies its military campaign in the East. The President of Ukraine on May 19 announced that the Donbass region in Eastern Ukraine had been completely destroyed and was in a "very difficult" situation.

Russia began pouring forces and firepower into eastern Ukraine from the end of March and launched the second phase of the military operation. Moscow has previously stated that the goal of the second phase of Russia's military operation in Ukraine is "totally liberate Donbass".
