29 Chinese military aircraft close to Taiwan

Taiwan sent fighter jets to monitor after 29 Chinese military planes entered the island's air defense identification zone on June 21.

Reuters quoted information from Taiwan's defense agency as saying that 29 Chinese military aircraft entered the island's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on June 21, including 17 fighter jets, 6 bombers. H-6 bombs, as well as electronic warfare, early warning, anti-submarine and refueling aircraft. Several planes flew over the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines and entered the Pacific Ocean before turning back.

Taiwan was forced to send fighter jets to drive away the Chinese squadron, while defense systems were deployed to keep an eye on it.

This is China's third major encroachment this year into the island's ADIZ. The biggest close since the beginning of the year took place on January 23 with 39 aircraft.

Mainland China has not yet commented on the information, but has often said that these are just periodic exercises to protect national security and sovereignty.

China has always considered Taiwan an indivisible territory and declared its readiness to reunify at any cost, even by force. China has repeatedly sent military aircraft into Taiwan's ADIZ, in a move said to be aimed at "stimulating" Taipei as well as its supporters. The frequency of flights close to Taiwan tends to increase in recent years in the context of Beijing increasing military pressure on Taiwan by traditional and non-traditional methods.
