Heavy Russian damage after Ukraine's attack on Snake Island

Many modern weapons of the Russian army were destroyed after Ukraine's attack on Snake Island.

The Ukrainian army on June 22 carried out attacks against the defense forces of the Russian Snake Island. Although the Russian side claimed to have repelled this fierce attack, the defense force of Snake Island still suffered heavy losses.

According to the announcement of the Southern Operations Command of the Ukrainian army, the Ukrainian offensive destroyed "a modern Pantsir S1 air defense system, a radar station and an armored command vehicle R-149 of Russia".

This announcement has not been verified by independent sources. However, some satellite images show that much of Russian infrastructure and equipment on Snake Island was hit by a Ukrainian air raid.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that 15 Ukrainian reconnaissance and attack drones took part in the strike, while multiple launch rocket systems and howitzers also fired on the island. 13 drones are believed to have been shot down.

Snake Island is located about 48 km from the southernmost tip of Ukraine and about 300 km from the Crimean peninsula. Although only about 18 hectares wide, with only soil, rocks, grass and no fresh water, Snake Island has played a very important role in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Given its location close to the route to Turkey's Bosphorus - the only route from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean, control of Snake Island could give the Russian Navy an edge in the Black Sea.
