Pro-Russian official in Ukraine was assassinated, Kremlin spoke out

 Russia has criticized the death of a high-ranking official of the Kherson region government, Ukraine - an area under Moscow's control, who was assassinated.


Russian media reported on June 24 that Dmitry Savluchenko, head of the youth and sports agency in Kherson region, Ukraine, was killed in an explosion. Kherson is currently under Moscow's control and the regional government has repeatedly expressed a desire to hold a referendum to join Russia.


"According to initial information, Mr. Savluchenko was killed. An explosive device was attached to his car," a representative of the Kherson administration confirmed to Interfax.


Later, deputy leader Kherson Kirill Stremousov also told RIA about the incident: "Yes, one of my employees has passed away. It is Mr. Dmitry Savluchenko, head of the youth and sports agency."


Kherson authorities informed Tass that it was a "targeted assassination," adding that the official was the sole victim in the blast.


On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Savluchenko's death was a terrorist attack and the case will be handled in that direction. 


According to Reuters, there have been a growing number of attacks on pro-Russian officials in regions of Ukraine under Moscow's control since late February.


On June 22, a pro-Russian official in the village of Chornobaivka survived the explosion in his car, while the head of the Kherson region's prison administration was wounded in a bomb blast. on June 18.


In late May, the mayor of Enerhodar in southern Zaporizhzhia, who was appointed after the Russian army took control of the city, was wounded in an explosion that Moscow alleged was caused by Ukrainian nationalists. after.
