Russia announced that it had killed 300 Ukrainian soldiers, surrounded 2,000 troops in Donbass

Russian forces announced the encirclement of 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers as they push to take control of two strategic cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk in the east.

The Russian Defense Ministry on June 24 confirmed that Russian air strikes killed 300 Ukrainian soldiers in the Kharkov and Nikolaev regions. In addition, Russian forces also surrounded about 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers in the Donbass region, eastern Ukraine.

According to Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov, in the Hirske region, Russian forces surrounded 2,000 people, including about 1,800 Ukrainian soldiers, 120 members of nationalist forces, 80 foreign mercenaries . Konashenkov said 41 Ukrainian soldiers had voluntarily surrendered to the Russian army in the past 24 hours.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on June 23 that the country's military forces had killed at least 650 Ukrainian soldiers in 24 hours. A day earlier, Russia confirmed that 500 Ukrainian servicemen were killed when Russian forces fired high-precision missiles at the Okean shipyard in Nikolaev.

Since the beginning of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, coordinated attacks by Russian air, artillery and missile forces have caused many casualties to the Ukrainian army.

Ukrainian officials said the battle for control of the two cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk in the eastern Ukrainian province of Lugansk is "entering the peak of fierceness". Ukraine believes that Russia is trying to control both Lugansk and Donetsk, two provinces in the Donbass region - the industrial center of Ukraine.

Lugansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai announced today that Ukrainian forces will withdraw from Severodonetsk after fierce clashes with Russian troops. Mr. Gaidai said the entire infrastructure of the city of Severodonetsk was completely destroyed. More than 90% of the houses were shelled, about 80% of the buildings were severely damaged.

According to Severodonetsk officials, the withdrawal process of Ukrainian forces could take several days. There are still 568 civilians in Severodonetsk, sheltering in the Azot chemical plant. The Russian military has called on Ukrainian forces in Azot to lay down their arms and surrender, and has pledged to open an evacuation corridor for civilians from the plant on condition of surrender.

After repelling Ukrainian forces from Severodonetsk, Russia continued to target Lysychansk, the city opposite Severodonetsk across the Donets River.

Ukrainian officials say Russia is trying to encircle Ukrainian forces in Lysychansk. Ukraine admits that all of Lysychansk is within range of Russian fire and that Ukrainian troops in the city can retreat to new positions to avoid encirclement.

The governor of Lugansk said today that Russian helicopters destroyed several roads and bridges leading to the city of Lysychansk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned Russia wants to "step by step destroy the entire Donbass".

If Russia controls Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, Russia can create a springboard for complete control of the Donbass region. After taking control of the Donbass, Russia could establish a corridor on the land connecting eastern Ukraine to the Crimean peninsula.
