Russia continues to penetrate Ukraine's defenses, expanding its control in Severodonetsk, a city in the Donbass region, eastern Ukraine.
The Guardian quoted Roman Vlasenko, the head of the military government of Severodonetsk, as saying that Russia had additionally controlled Toshkivka, a town on the Donbass frontline since yesterday. "As of today, according to our information, Russia has complete control of Toshkivka," Vlasenko said.
Earlier, sources familiar with the matter said that over the weekend, Russian troops broke through Ukraine's defenses in Toshkivka.
Toshkivka is a small town about 19km southeast of the center of Severodonetsk. The town serves as a key Ukrainian line of defense in southeastern Severodonetsk. Taking control of Toshkivka, Russia could move closer to central Severodonetsk and the neighboring city of Lychansk. More importantly, that could threaten Ukraine's supply routes, putting thousands of Ukrainian troops in these two cities at risk of encirclement and isolation.
The Russian takeover of Toshkivka is another sign that the war in Donbass is at a decisive stage. Ukrainian officials believe that next week will be crucial for Moscow's plan to take control of Severodonetsk.
Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar said that Russia is gathering forces to prepare for the "final battle" in Severodonetsk and Lysychansk. According to her, the Russian leadership has set a deadline of June 26 for their forces to reach the administrative border of Lugansk province, or in other words control both strategic cities of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Lugansk Governor Serhiy Haidai said that the villages and towns around Severodonetsk and Lysychansk were the sites of the fiercest fighting. He admitted the situation in Severodonetsk was "very difficult".
Severodonetsk and Lysychansk are considered Ukraine's last checkpoints to prevent Russia from fully controlling the Donbass region (including two provinces of Lugansk and Donetsk). If Russia captures these two cities, Russia can create a springboard to attack in Donetsk. However, over the past month, Moscow, with its superiority in both soldiers and firepower, has not been able to control these two "fortresses".
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky predicts that Russia will intensify its attacks in the Donbass this week when the European Union (EU) meets to decide on a proposal to admit Ukraine. "A historic week has begun. We believe that the Russian side will increase the frequency of attacks. Exactly this week. Not only against Ukraine but also against European countries. We are preparing. I'm ready," said President Zelensky.
He also called on the West to speed up military aid to Ukraine in the context that the Ukrainian army is having to deal with the momentum of Russia's advance amid the shortage of ammunition and weapons.
