Russia pours "rain" of missiles on Kharkov

In the midst of the hot Donbass war, Russia suddenly returned to attack Kharkov. This is considered a new tactic of Moscow.

Reuters reported that in two days, June 21-22, Russian forces launched a series of missile and artillery attacks on the Kharkov region, northeast of Ukraine. It was the fiercest assault on Kharkov in weeks after Russian troops withdrew last month and life has almost returned to normal.

"It is proof that we cannot expect the same scenario in Chernihiv or Kiev, where Russia is under pressure to withdraw," Kharkov Governor Oleh Synehubov commented. He added that the attacks on Kharkov left 15 people dead and 16 injured.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the President of Ukraine, said: "Russian forces are attacking the city of Kharkov in the same way they did with Mariupol in order to instill fear and force us to transfer part of our firepower here to protect our security. protect the people". According to Mr. Arestovych, it is Moscow's tactic to disperse Ukraine's resources in the Donbass - the fiercest conflict front today.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously warned that Russia will increase the frequency of attacks before a summit of the European Union (EU) on June 24 to decide whether to grant Kiev candidate status or not. .

According to information from the General Staff of Ukraine, over the past few days, Russia has bombarded Kharkov and neighboring villages and towns, and repeatedly bombed the city of Severodonetsk in the Donbass.

The governor of Lugansk province in the Donbass, Serhiy Haidai, said that the Russian army is constantly increasing its troops and firepower on the Severodonetsk front line to encircle Ukrainian forces. He rejected Moscow's claim that the Russian army was in control of the city. "The fighting is still going on. Russia has not been able to fully control the city," Haidai said.

Russia withdrew its forces from Kiev, Chernihiv and then Kharkov to concentrate its forces on the goal of encircling Ukrainian forces on the Donbass battlefield, moving towards complete control of eastern Ukraine. Russia currently dominates the Donbass thanks to its overwhelming number of soldiers and firepower. According to Ukrainian officials' estimates, Moscow's firepower is 15 times their own.

However, the British military intelligence agency said that the pace of Russia's advance is slowing down and will level off in the next few months. "Our defense intelligence agency believes that in the next few months, the Russian forces will not be able to maintain the momentum of the offensive due to the exhaustion of resources. Therefore, we need to help Ukraine turn the situation around. I will talk about this at the G7 summit," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

The leaders of the G7 industrialized countries are expected to meet in Germany later this week. The war in Ukraine is expected to be one of the important topics at the conference.
