South Korea records the first 2 suspected cases of monkeypox

 The first cases of monkeypox have been recorded in South Korea.


South Korean officials on Wednesday announced the first two suspected cases of monkeypox virus detected in the country, adding that diagnostic tests are being carried out and that the Health authorities will hold a press conference after the tests are completed.

One of the suspected cases is a foreign national believed to have latent symptoms since Sunday, entered South Korea on Monday and is currently being treated in isolation at a hospital in the city. Busan, about 300km southeast of Seoul.

The other is a South Korean citizen who showed symptoms on entry from Germany on Tuesday afternoon, June 21, and was admitted to Incheon Medical Center for treatment.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) said, "Diagnostic tests and epidemiological investigations of monkeypox are underway, and health authorities will quickly organize a meeting to announce measures and response plan when results are available".

However, the KDCA has not provided further details on individuals with monkeypox.

Earlier this month, South Korea designated monkeypox as a second-degree infectious disease under the country's four-tier system, along with 22 other infectious diseases including Covid-19, cholera and chickenpox.
