The Russian oil refinery caught fire like a "fireball", suspected of being hit by a Ukrainian UAV

A Russian oil refinery located near the Ukraine border caught fire, suspected of being hit by a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The Tass news agency , citing a source familiar with the local government, said a fire broke out at the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery, in the Rostov region of Russia on June 22.

This factory is located about 8km from the border with Ukraine. Before the fire, two UAVs were detected flying in this area, suspected to be Ukrainian.

The source told Tass that one of the planes crashed into the heat exchanger at the refinery, causing the fire to start. The second plane then flew away.

A video has surfaced on social media, where it is described as the drone flying near the Russian facility before it collided, creating a large fireball and black smoke.

Interfax quoted local authorities as saying that the fire had been extinguished. No one was injured following the incident at the plant, which has an annual capacity of about 7.5 million tons.

The Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery was built last century. It has been in operation since 2009.

In April, a Russian oil depot in the city of Bryansk had a fierce fire. Russia has opened an investigation into the cause of the incident.
