Thieves broke into a warehouse at a Mexican port on the Pacific coast and stole 20 containers, some of which contained gold, silver or other valuables.
AP quoted information from the Mexican Workers' Association (MEF) on June 13, saying the incident happened on June 5 in the city of Manzanillo, Colima state.
MEF President Jose Medina Mora said this large-scale theft is a sign that crime is on the rise in Mexico. The head of Mexican customs, Horacio Duarte, confirmed the incident and confirmed it was an organized crime. "This is a very serious organized crime operation," Mr Duarte said.
According to local media, about 10 armed thieves broke into the port warehouse area, overpowered security forces, then spent several hours searching for containers of valuable goods they wanted to take. , in which there are a number of containers containing gold, silver ore, television. Next, they used cranes and trucks to steal the containers.
Mexican authorities are investigating the incident, but have not disclosed the value of the goods that were stolen. Items such as televisions, after being stolen by thieves, can quickly flow to the black market, but it is not clear where they can sell the gold and silver ore.
Cargo thefts are not uncommon in Mexico, but they are usually robberies of container trucks moving on the highway. The theft of 20 containers at the port last week is considered unprecede
nted and is the largest container theft ever.
