Ukraine arrests 2 senior officials on suspicion of spying for Russia

Ukrainian security forces have arrested two senior government officials on suspicion of providing intelligence to Russia.


Reuters reported that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) arrested two senior government officials after accusing them of being part of a Russian spy network.


The two officials, who were not named, currently hold senior positions at the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers of Ukraine as well as the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.  


"These two people have passed on a lot of important intelligence to the enemy, from the combat capabilities of the army to the disposition of forces at the border as well as the personal information of officers in the law enforcement force. Ukraine", the SBU announced.


In addition, the Ukrainian security service also revealed that depending on the secrecy and importance of the intelligence, the two officials received between $ 2,000 and $ 15,000 for each information. One of them has been collaborating with the Russian side since 2016, while the other started providing intelligence to Russia in 2019.


According to the SBU, a special operation was carefully planned and executed to verify the two senior officials' involvement with Russian spies.


Currently, Russian officials have not commented on this information.


Earlier, the SBU discovered and arrested a man in the port city of Odessa for allegedly assisting in targeting for Russian military airstrikes on an arterial bridge over the mouth of the Dniester River.
