Why did Russia overwhelmingly attack and repel Ukraine in the "fire pan" of the East?

American officials have pointed out the reasons for the Russian military to gain an advantage in skirmishes with Ukrainian forces on the eastern front.

According to two US officials with access to intelligence, Russian forces are gaining an advantage in eastern Ukraine after learning from mistakes made in the early stages of the military campaign.

The US official said that Russian forces have better coordinated air and ground attacks, and improved supply and logistics lines.

The United States does not expect the new weapons systems recently delivered to Ukrainian forces, including the highly mobile artillery missile system HIMARS, to immediately change the situation on the battlefield, in part because of these systems. This system so far has had a limited range and number of missiles to ensure that they cannot hit Russian territory. In addition, Russian forces also destroyed many Western-supplied weapons to Ukraine, including M777 howitzers.

The US assessment comes in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict entering a decisive moment in recent days. Donetsk and Lugansk, collectively known as the Donbass region, record fierce fighting and are where Russia aims for "complete liberation". Ukraine currently controls 45% of the territory of the Donetsk region, while the remaining 55% is under the control of the Russian military. In Lugansk, the Russian military currently controls about 95%.

After more than four months of hostilities, Western governments are facing a difficult decision on whether they want to continue increasing military aid to Ukraine.

The US assessment predicts a bleak outlook for the future of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with significant personnel and equipment losses on both sides. U.S. officials believe that Russia plans to continue its fierce offensive in eastern Ukraine, primarily with artillery and heavy missile attacks, with the goal of gradually weakening Ukrainian forces as well as determined by NATO.

The momentum of Russia's advance in eastern Ukraine has been evident in recent days, after Ukraine struggled to defend Lysychansk, the last city in the Lugansk province still controlled by Ukraine. Recently, Russia entered several villages south of Lysychansk, although it still suffered some casualties from Ukrainian artillery fire.

Members of Ukraine's parliament have told US lawmakers that the Russian military has calculated the number of weapons that Western allies have in stockpiles to supply Ukraine and is planning to wait for Ukrainian forces. run out of these weapons. Meanwhile, Ukraine's stockpile consists mainly of weapons previously produced by Russia.

"Russia has not been deterred. This war could last for many years," said Mike Quigley, a congressman on the US House Intelligence Committee.

The US Defense Department's watchdog has opened a review of the plan to rearm its arsenal of weapons and equipment after Washington continued to supply significant quantities of weapons to Ukraine.

In the coming weeks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will speak at G7 and NATO summits. The Ukrainian leader is still trying to get Western support to deal with Russia's military campaign.

During the upcoming G7 summit, President Joe Biden will announce steps, along with other leaders, to increase pressure on Russia. At the NATO conference, the US will announce measures to strengthen European security, in addition to new contributions from allies.
