A Chinese official thanked tech billionaire Elon Musk for coming up with the idea of de-escalating tensions on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Chinese Ambassador to the US Qin Gang said on October 9: "I would like to thank Mr. Elon Musk for his call for cross-Strait reconciliation and his suggestion of finding a model of a special economic zone. administration for Taiwan. In fact, peaceful reunification under the one-country, two-system mechanism are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan issue."
Hours later, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning reiterated Ambassador Qin Gang's position.
"As long as national sovereignty, security and development interests are guaranteed, Taiwan can apply a high degree of autonomy as a special administrative region," Mao said.
Earlier, in an interview with the Financial Times published on October 7, US billionaire Elon Musk said that the tension between mainland China and the island of Taiwan can be completely resolved.
"My suggestion is to find a model of a special administrative region for Taiwan. It's a reasonable proposition, but it may not satisfy everyone."
On the other hand, Mr. Musk warned, if a conflict in the Taiwan Strait broke out, it could disrupt the supply of goods made in China to the West and global GDP could drop by up to 30%.
China has always considered Taiwan an inalienable part of its territory and declared its readiness to reunify at any cost, including by military force.
China has proposed a "one country, two systems" model for Taiwan, similar to Hong Kong, and opposes any outside efforts to interfere in Taiwan affairs. However, to date, the island has not supported this proposal.
The Taiwan issue is one of the most thorny topics in US-China relations. Although the US has no official relationship with Taiwan, it is the island's top military and economic partner.
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in early August visited the island despite objections from Beijing.
The administration of US President Joe Biden affirmed that it still adheres to the "One China" policy. However, Mr. Biden last month also said that US forces would defend Taiwan if the island was attacked.
China then sent out a strong protest message. Mao Ning stated that China has the right to take all necessary measures to respond to actions that divide the country.
"We are willing to do our best to work towards the goal of peaceful reunification. At the same time, we will not tolerate any actions aimed at secessionism," Mao said.
The Chinese diplomat called on the US to handle Taiwan-related issues carefully and properly, and not send false messages to "separatist forces demanding Taiwan independence". She warned that the US would not seriously damage Sino-US relations and peace in the Taiwan Strait.
