Massive explosion in Russia's region bordering Ukraine

 Several large explosions were recorded in the Belgorod region bordering the Ukraine border, in the context that many cities in Ukraine are being attacked by rockets with high frequency.

Two witnesses told Reuters they heard a loud explosion on the morning of October 10 in the Belgorod area, near the Ukrainian border. Witnesses said the explosion was very loud and the windows of houses in the area were shaken.


RIA Novosti news agency later quoted a local official as saying that the explosions in Belgorod and the surrounding area were carried out by Russia destroying ammunition at the weapons test site.


Meanwhile, Belgorod Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov accused Ukrainian forces of opening fire on villages close to the border between the two countries on October 10. Reuters could not verify the above information.


Belgorod region is located close to Kharkov, Ukraine - where Russia is conducting a special military operation . Belgorod has in recent months become an important transit point for Russian weapons and food.


Russia began construction of a large military base in Valuysky, Belgorod at a cost of about $50 million in 2015, shortly after annexing Crimea. Valuysky is now a place where relatives of Russian soldiers and citizens supply troops stationed nearby.


In recent times, Belgorod has often recorded large explosions and attacks in areas.


On September 16, Governor Gladkov accused Ukraine of shelling the area, killing one civilian and injuring two others. Ukrainian artillery shells penetrated Russian air defenses, destroyed 3 vehicles and burned 8 houses.


The big explosion in Belgorod took place in the context that today, many cities in Ukraine were hit by rockets. Ukrainian media, citing various sources, reported that large explosions were recorded in the capital Kiev, Lviv, Kharkov, Zhytomyr, Khmelnitsky, Dnipro and Ternopil.


Ukrainian officials accuse Russia of being behind the missile strikes. "They are trying to destroy us, wipe us off the earth," said President Volodymyr Zelensky.


At least five people were killed and 12 injured when rockets hit the city today, the Kiev police force said.
