Romania's Defense Minister Vasile Dincu resigned amid criticism after suggesting Ukraine give up some territory in order to reach a peace deal with Russia.
RT reported that Romanian Defense Minister Vasile Dincu on October 24 submitted his resignation and announced it on Facebook. He said he could not cooperate with President Klaus Iohannis, who harshly criticized his suggestion of a peace agreement between Moscow and Kiev on the basis of territorial concessions.
"I resign because I am no longer able to cooperate with the President of Romania, who holds the post of commander-in-chief of the armed forces. This decision is necessary to avoid hindering the decision-making process, as well as to avoid affecting the a series of important projects with the optimal operational capabilities of the Romanian army," wrote Minister Dincu.
In an interview earlier this month, Dincu called for international negotiations to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, this process requires "the participation of countries in the world, the US and NATO".
He explained, the Ukrainian government cannot open negotiations (with Russia) because its political leaders do not accept giving up the territory. According to him, even if only "freezing" the conflict, negotiations are still more beneficial than what is happening now.
Dincu's views were immediately met with harsh criticism from the ruling coalition in Romania and President Iohannis. Iohannis said that only Ukraine has the right to decide when and with whom to negotiate.
As for Ukraine, responding to Dincu's suggestion, the country's officials stated that Kiev is only ready to negotiate with Western countries on a single topic: joining NATO.
The Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its ninth month and continues to show new signs of escalation. Moscow changed tactics, intensifying attacks on critical infrastructure across Ukraine ahead of the winter to thwart Kiev's counter-attack.
Despite these challenges, Ukraine insists that it will never accept territorial concessions in exchange for a peace agreement with Russia. Kiev said that negotiations will only take place when Moscow withdraws all its troops and Ukraine regains all of its territory.
Ukraine is counter-attacking strongly in Kherson, in the south of the country. In recent days, the Russian-appointed Kherson government has begun evacuating tens of thousands of people, moving troops and equipment from the right bank to the left bank of the Dnipro River.
Some argue that Russia is withdrawing from the strategic Ukrainian city after more than half a year of control. However, Kyrylo Budanov, head of the intelligence department of Ukraine's Defense Ministry, warned that Moscow may be trying to distract.
"There is no such thing as Russia withdrawing from Kherson. In many ways, this is a distraction... In other words, they are creating the illusion that everything is over. On the contrary, they are bringing the New army units enter there and prepare to defend every street," Budanov said.
