China accuses US airship of violating airspace more than 10 times

China insists it has responded "responsibly and professionally" to the US hot air balloons that allegedly entered its airspace.

At a press conference on February 13, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that since January 2022, US hot air balloons have entered China's airspace more than 10 times. "Last year alone, the US airship violated China's airspace more than 10 times without the permission of the local authorities," Wang said.

However, the Chinese diplomat did not elaborate on the allegation. Responding to a question about Beijing's response to the US hot air balloons, Mr. Wang affirmed that China responded responsibly and professionally.

He also accused the US of regularly sending military aircraft and ships on reconnaissance missions near China, including 657 times in 2022 alone.

The comment comes amid strained US-China relations after Washington shot down a Chinese hot air balloon that entered US airspace for several days. The US suspects this is a spy balloon, but China says it is just a civilian balloon for meteorological research purposes. The US recovered the wreckage of the balloon for analysis and refused to return it to the Chinese side.

Last week, the US Department of Commerce added to a list of sanctions six companies suspected of having links to the Chinese military's aerospace and aviation programs. Accordingly, the above businesses are prohibited from accessing US technology without the consent of the US government.

Beijing criticized the US actions as outrageous, and warned it had the right to respond similarly.
