President of Ukraine: The situation in the South is very dangerous

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that the military situation in some parts of the south of the country is very dangerous, while the eastern front is very difficult.

In his nightly video address on February 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that pro-Russian forces continued to attack the city of Kherson, southern Ukraine, destroying gas infrastructure.

"In some parts of the South, the situation is very dangerous, but our military has a way to deal with the enemy. I just received a report on the Kherson situation. The latest Russian attack has destroyed it. The main gas pipeline supplies gas to about 600 buildings, serving more than 40,000 people," Zelensky said.

Repair work at Kherson will continue until the heating system is restored, he stressed. The Ukrainian leader affirmed: "We will rebuild. No matter what Russia and pro-Russian forces do, we will rebuild, restore everything."

"On the Eastern Front, the situation is very difficult and painful, but we are doing everything we can to get through it," he added. In recent months, Russian forces have concentrated their forces and intensified their attacks to take full control of the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine including Lugansk and Donetsk regions.

Summing up the situation on other fronts at the time when the Russia-Ukraine conflict was one year old, Zelensky said that the Odessa and Black Sea regions were still under control. In the north, the Ukrainian army continues to understand the intentions of Russian forces and strengthens defenses in key positions.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its second year, but there is no sign of abating. Ukrainian officials predict that Russia may be preparing a large-scale offensive to break the deadlock on the battlefield this spring.

In an interview with the BBC, Mr. Zelensky said that Moscow has not given up its intention to control Kiev with the direction of attack from Belarus. At the beginning of the conflict last year, Russian forces attempted to encircle Kiev in a flash but failed.

Zelensky warned that it would be a "big mistake" if Belarus supported Russia in controlling Kiev. However, Belarus has repeatedly denied its participation in Russia's military campaign in Ukraine. President Alexander Lukashenko recently stated that Minsk only fought with Moscow when Belarus was attacked.

Even so, Ukraine said it is still ready for any scenario. Kiev calls on its Western allies and partners to increase military aid in the upcoming critical period.

Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Melnik on February 23 called on Germany to overcome "all red lines it has drawn" in its aid policy to Kiev. In an interview with the DPA news site, the Ukrainian diplomat appreciated that Germany had decided to "break the taboo" and pledged to support Kiev from the very beginning in the conflict with Russia.

"The implementation of this turning point has been significantly slowed down, more like a zigzag road with more setbacks than strategic forwards. Ukraine therefore calls on Germany to cross any red lines it has drawn on its own and to supply the Ukrainian armed forces all existing weapons systems," Andrey said.
