UN asks Russia to unconditionally withdraw troops from Ukraine

A majority of UN members voted to recommend that Russia immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukraine one year after the conflict broke out.

According to Reuters, with 141 votes in favor, the United Nations on February 23 passed a resolution asking Russia to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from Ukraine. In the voting session yesterday, 7 UN member states voted against, 32 members abstained.

The resolution affirms support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting Russia's claims about annexed regions. In addition, the resolution also requires Moscow to "immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw troops from Ukrainian territory on the basis of internationally recognized borders", "stop hostile actions".

Resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly are mainly symbolic, not binding. However, unlike in the Security Council, Russia cannot unilaterally veto.

Commenting at the vote, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said: "Russia can and must end (the conflict) tomorrow."

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya rejected the resolution and accused the West of drawing Ukraine and the developing world into a war to defeat Russia. "They are ready to push the whole world into war," Nebenzya said.

In response to this accusation, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell stressed: "This war is not a European problem, nor is it a war between the West and Russia. concern for the whole world, from the North, the South, the East to the West".

In yesterday's session, China was one of the countries that voted blank. Before the meeting, China's Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Dai Bing reaffirmed Beijing's neutral position, calling on the two sides to stop the conflict and sit down at the negotiating table.

"We support Russia and Ukraine to resume direct dialogue as soon as possible, resolve concerns through negotiations, come up with possible solutions, quickly end the crisis, seize the opportunity," he said. peace," the Chinese diplomat stated.

China is trying to play the role of mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Beijing has pledged to publish its peace plan at a time that marks the one-year anniversary of the conflict. Bloomberg cited sources familiar with Beijing's plan as calling for respect for territorial integrity as well as proposals to ensure security for nuclear facilities, banning the use of chemical and biological weapons. In addition, the proposal also includes calling on the parties to cease fire and the West to stop providing arms to Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials say that Beijing has shared the main points of the peace plan, but Kiev still needs to consider the details. The administration of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also emphasized the priority of the 10-point peace formula proposed by Kiev.
